Key Features
Scene Files
This camera features a scene file dial which allows you to choose an appropriate matrix of settings instantaneously. You can control the colour, contrast, sharpness and virtually every camera setting to create a unique look.
This feature is super useful when working with multiple cameras and different lighting scenarios, you can control the file to get the best possible match right out of the camera.
Creating Boulderhouse specific scene files will help us have a more consistent product and save more time colour matching while editing.
SLow motion
The video specs on this camera allow us to shoot 1080/60p. This upgrade from my current set up, the 60 frames per second will give us the ability to create unique moments with ultra slow motion.
incredible 22x lens
This camera has a very unique integrated lens. the 22x Hi quality lens is insanely versatile and has coverage from a wide angle to a telephoto lens. The trigger Zoom is a great feature to make action shots exciting. You can zoom in to intensify the move as it is happening or zoom out to give the viewer a better perspective. The trigger zoom allows you to make these changes without the shake that comes with physically moving the lens on a DSLR.
The Panasonic has a 28mm to 616mm equivalent Lens at (F1.6). For professional glass this range is absolutely unheard of. Most DSLR set ups would need 3 different lenses to cover this huge range (24-70)(70-200)(200-600).
For a Sony DSLR set up, collecting these lenses to have the same range would be very expensive. It would cost $ 3000 for a 24mm - 70mm F2.8, $3500 for 70mm - 200mm F.8 and $ 2500 for a 200mm - 600mm variable F5.6 to F6.3.
It would cost more than $ 9000.00 to replicate the same Zoom range on a Sony DSLR as the Panasonic AC 160A.
Video Quality
The Panasonic AC 160A has an amazing video quality. The stunning and huge 3MOS Sensor captures stunning movie grade video and colour. The camera is also amazing in Low Light with a F1.6 Aperture capability and features a four-position optical ND filter wheel (OFF, 1/4 ND, 1/16 ND, 1/64 ND).
The high-performance 22x zoom lens was designed specifically for professional HD video production. To compensate for any shaking of the operator's hand, the AC160A features an optical image stabilizer (OIS). It also has a 16-bit Linear PCM 2-channel digital microphone that captures professional grade audio.
I’ve owned this camera in the past and absolutely loved using it and was always impressed by the quality.
How does it stack against what’s available today?
Panasonic HC-VX3 UHD 4K ($1350.00 + tax)
Panasonic HC-VX3 UHD 4K Camcorder was released in November 2024. It currently sells at Henry’s for $ 1350.00+ tax
While it is awesome that it does shoot for 4K, most of the other camera features fall short to what Panasonic was offering in 2012 with the AC160A.
At 1080p the new HC-VX3 UHD (2024) only offers 60fps just like the AC. The newer camera has a smaller sensor, single channel worse Microphone, and is not as good in low light as it can only go F1.8 compared to F1.6 on the AC160A released in 2012.
The older camera has a better look due to the amazing 3MOS SENSOR. It also has a better menu, a better experience to navigate between settings on the camera then hidden on a touch screen. The size and weight of the camera is actually a benefit in my eyes, it makes it easier to hold a steady shot when holing it with 2 hands with the back of the camera against the chest.
Why the Panasonic AC 160A? ($ 1800.00)
Panasonic HC-X2 4K Camcorder ($ 4499.00 + tax)
Panasonic HC-X2 4K Camcorder was also released in November 2024. It currently sells at Henry’s for $ 4499.00+ tax
This camera has all the bells and whistles, 4k at 60 fps, Full HD super slow motion 120 fps.
This is an unbelievable camera that is a direct upgrade from the AC160A. The only hold back is the heavy price tag.
The Panasonic AC160A offers professional-level features that stack up to whats available in 2025.
This camera simply captures life beautifully and I think would be a great inventment for the gym.
Thank you so much!
